About this role

About Value Research Value Research runs three subscription products (Value Research Online, Value Research Fund Advisor, and Value Research Stock Advisor), each with its own subscriber base, content, and commercial model, plus two monthly magazines: Mutual Fund Insight (personal finance and funds) and Wealth Insight (stocks). As the business grows, we need someone to keep a clear, accurate picture of how all of it is performing. This is a hands-on role: you'll set up tracking, build dashboards, write reports, and flag what needs attention. You won't manage a team. You'll be building a function that doesn't exist yet, so expect the first few months to go into working out what should be tracked, and how, before any of it can be reported on meaningfully. The scope is everything a user can do across Value Research's platforms: every product, every title, every surface. Roles & Responsibilities • Tracking and instrumentation: Work with the tech team and product owners to track the right events across web, app, and backend. Define naming conventions and measurement standards so that when two people discuss a metric (renewal rate, story completion rate), they mean the same number, calculated the same way. Document it in a shared reference the whole team can use. • Dashboards: Build the central dashboard the Head of Product and CEO use to track health across the business, and help segment owners build their own for the surfaces they run. Keep everything current; a dashboard nobody trusts is worse than none. • Monitoring and flagging: Watch the numbers across every product and title, independently of what individual owners are watching. When something moves unexpectedly (payment success drops, onboarding drop-offs spike, story readership shifts), flag it quickly, with enough context for the right person to act. You catch what owners miss while they're focused on their own area. • Weekly and monthly reports: A short weekly product-health summary for the Head of Product, and a monthly report for the CEO. Direct and to the point: what happened, what it means, what needs a decision. • Experiment support: Help segment owners set up and read A/B tests: properly instrumented, run long enough to mean something, and interpreted correctly before anyone acts on them. • Data quality: When a number looks wrong, work out whether it's a real movement or a tracking problem, and fix tracking problems fast so no one acts on bad data. You own the reliability of the data layer, not just the reports on top of it. • Competitive benchmarking: Keep a basic reference of how our key metrics compare to available industry benchmarks: renewal rates, open rates, payment success, engagement. Not deep research, just enough for leadership to know whether our numbers are genuinely good or only better than last month. What we're looking for • Two to three years of hands-on experience in product analytics or business intelligence. You should have personally built dashboards, written SQL, set up event tracking, and produced regular reports, not managed people who did. Experience at a subscription or consumer internet business helps but isn't required. • Practical working knowledge of analytics platforms like Google Analytics or similar) and a dashboard tool (Looker, Metabase, Tableau, or Power BI). SQL matters. Python or R is a plus, not a requirement. • Beyond the technical side, what matters most is the willingness to report what the data actually show, even when it isn't what people want to hear. You'll work with experienced product owners who hold strong views about their own surfaces, and the job takes the confidence to present a finding clearly even when it makes for an uncomfortable conversation. What this role is not Not a data science role: we're not looking for predictive models. Not a business analyst role centered on requirements gathering. And not a reporting role with fixed outputs to produce on schedule. You'll define the outputs, based on what the business actually needs to know.
