Power BI or Tableau: which do analyst job postings ask for more?

Short answer
It depends on the country. In 2,416 analyst postings on realanalystjobs.com read on 7 and 8 October 2026, Tableau leads in the US (27% vs 19%) and Canada (21% vs 13%), while Power BI leads in India (32% vs 24%) and the UK (17% vs 14%). SQL is named more often than either tool in every country, in 51% to 60% of postings.

Many postings do not make you choose
Of the US postings that name a BI tool, 144 of 386 name both Power BI and Tableau. In India it is 130 of 272, in the UK 42 of 90, and in Canada 9 of 29.
SQL beats both tools everywhere
SQL appears in 53% of US, 54% of India, 51% of UK and 60% of Canada postings. Any BI tool appears in 33% (US), 38% (India), 21% (UK) and 26% (Canada). Python sits between them in every country.
What it means for job seekers
- Learn SQL first. More postings ask for it than for any BI tool, in all four countries.
- Then learn the BI tool your target market uses most: Tableau for the US and Canada, Power BI for India and the UK.
- Learn one tool deeply rather than both shallowly. Many postings list both (144 of 386 US postings that name a BI tool), and the skills transfer.
Method
- Sample: every US, India, UK and Canada role on realanalystjobs.com/jobs with a job description, from the board snapshot of 6 October 2026. Descriptions were read from each role's page on 7 and 8 October 2026.
- Exclusions: postings from the reposting sites Jobgether and Weekday were removed, and duplicates (same company, title and country) were removed, leaving 2,416 postings.
- Counting: a tool counts when the description names it. Power BI matches Power BI or PowerBI; Tableau matches Tableau; SQL matches SQL, MySQL, PostgreSQL or T-SQL; Python matches Python.
- Shares are of each country's postings. A posting that names both BI tools counts once in Either BI tool.
Limitations
- A mention is not a requirement. The count does not separate must-have from nice-to-have.
- Canada's sample is small (112 postings), so its shares can move a lot with a few postings.
- One snapshot of one board in early October 2026, read from company career pages.
- Excel is not reported. The board's own Excel tag overcounts (it can match words like excellent), so an Excel share needs its own careful count.

Tableau. It is named in 309 (27%) of 1,158 US analyst postings read on 7 and 8 October 2026, against 221 (19%) for Power BI.
Is Power BI or Tableau more in demand in India?
Power BI. It is named in 229 (32%) of 719 India analyst postings, against 173 (24%) for Tableau. Capco, WPP and Brillio had the most Power BI postings.
Should I learn Power BI or Tableau first?
SQL first: it appears in 51% to 60% of postings in every country, more than either BI tool. Then pick the tool your target market uses most, and know that many postings list both.
What about the UK and Canada?
In the UK Power BI leads narrowly (17% vs 14% of 427 postings). In Canada Tableau leads (21% vs 13%), from a smaller sample of 112 postings.
